This is great! Please EVERYONE let me know what books you loved, as a child/youth, that informed your understanding of sex and gender. Was anyone else out there a Marion Zimmer Bradley fan? Those books gave me a LOT to process.

Books that formed my opinion on sex... I honestly can't think of any. Maybe that's why it took me so long to come up with reasonable expectations and confidence regarding the act. As for gender, what I really think about is the Madeline L'Engle books-- she had such great female heroines, and they really influenced my sense of "girls are awesome and can do things that boys do, and better!" The girl in a Wrinkle in Team is rescuing her dad-- how cool is that?
Of course! Madeline L'Engle is a great one, though I never made much headway on the third book in the series.
Lynn Reid Bank's "The Fairy Rebel." Anyone?
Hey, judy blume got me through 5th and 6th grade, what can I say?
"Are you there God, It's Me, Margaret" (getting her period)
"Nothing's Fair in 5th Grade" (being fat when you're little)
"6th Grade Can Really Kill You"
"Then Again, Maybe I Won't" (masturbation)
And of course, sex and love erupted in: "Forever."
This was the first book I read about what sex might be like for a teen-ager, physically and emotionally. It transcended deep when I was 12.
"How to Fight a Girl" (by the author of "How to Eat Fried Worms")
To datingdiarynyc, I thought it was only Deenie that dealt with masturbation? I'm not sure that I've read "Then Again," though, so I could be wrong. But for Ms. Blume, a shout-out to "Starring Sally J. Friedman As Herself," which isn't about sex or love, but is an awesome girl character.
@katey
then again actually has a MALE protagonist, so it's different masturbation than in deenie. also i totally did NOT realize that deenie's "special place" was THAT special place for a really long time after i first read the book. so i guess that one didn't do too much to form my opinion about sex, huh?
